A select group of TikTok users is testing the clear mode feature, a mode designed to remove most of the user interface to allow a viewing experience free of buttons, captions, or other distractions.
Tell Me More
TikTok, with an active user base of over 1 billion users a month, is testing a new mode for select users that removes portions of the user interface for a cleaner way to view app content.
What Is Clear Mode?
TikTok’s new feature removes buttons and captions from the sides and bottom of the content. Normal app users see buttons for sharing, liking, and commenting on the right side of content; the bottom displays information such as captions and the audio in use.
How Do I Check if I Have Clear Mode?
To see if you are one of the lucky users with this feature, you bring up the settings in your app by tapping and holding the screen. You should see Clear Mode under the Add to Favorites option.
New Test Is Another Way for TikTok To Snag and Keep Users
The test appears to be another way for the fast-growing social app to keep users engaged for longer. TikTok has been praised for its minimalist UI/UX design, forcing users to focus on one clip at a time rather than several.

TikTok Continues To Grow at Fever Pitch, Add New Features
TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media apps in the past decade. The app started in 2016 and quickly gained a following due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The app began reaching over a billion users each month by the end of 2021.
The Chinese-based app started by allowing users to post 15-second video clips but quickly made the jump into allowing for longer clips. Earlier in 2022, the app let users post clips as long as 10 minutes, up from the previous maximum length of 3 minutes.
TikTok also added the ability for certain users to live stream through the Creator portal, a subsection of the app for those who have gained a large enough following. Those who can gain access to the Creator portal can also use it to monetize their account.
What’s Next for TikTok?
TikTok appears to have grander aspirations rather than just being known as a dance app. A recent article from Wired claims that TikTok’s senior leadership sees the growth trajectory clearly and wants to turn the platform into the next Facebook.
The Wired article goes further, claiming that while the app is for content creators, the algorithmic technology at its core is more valuable. There are still questions about whether the trajected growth is sustainable, considering Western politicians have concerns about Tiktok’s Chinese origin.
With revenue on track for 60 percent growth in 2021, the company continues to push technological boundaries in hopes of enlarging its user base and keeping the ones already on the app hooked even longer.
